PBS.org Explore Page

I was tasked with updating what was known as PBS.org Video Landing, a page for users to explore all PBS video content.

I lead visual design and stakeholder presentations for this project. I collaborated with Mary Crocamo, Design Director, and Chris Koth, Director of UX Design.

The existing Video Landing page didn’t meet user expectations or align with our competitors in the video streaming space.

Instead of updating the current video page, with the help of the PBS Digital Design team, we came up with the concept of a browse experience.

We named it “Explore”.

Instead of focusing on the content type, we shifted the focus to the use case for our audience.

This would empower both our users to explore and sample new content and our PBS content team to build and populate the page in a way that met their editorial needs.

I started with several rounds of sketching to try out different page layouts and ideas for new components to highlight different content types.

I did each round sketching in Procreate on my iPad. Between each round, we had a design team review and brainstorm.

The page was designed using 5 main components, each tailored to a specific type of content and user experience.

Components gave the content team the ability to curate the Explore page and to update it frequently with new and promoted content.

Along with a new flexible hero area, I created 3 new unique components: Featured Videos, Trailers, and Show Poster Video Rows.

Each component met a specific need expressed by the content team and met our goal of empowering users to explore and sample new content.

With the content team building out the Explore page and using components for the first time, I made sure to be an available resource.

The design team and product managers wanted to ensure that each time the Explore page is updated, every component is being used for its intended design. This ensures that the user experience is consistent and the layout is easy to navigate.

To set the content team as well the back-end and front-end developers up for success, I laid out each new component along with requirements and any flexibility.

The Explore page is currently in QA with the PBS.org front-end developers.

The PBS.org Explore page will be live by the end of 2022.
